An evacuation chair moves a person who cannot use the stairs down the stairs in an emergency, when the lifts cannot be used. It is part of a building's evacuation plan for staff and visitors with reduced mobility.

Each chair is stored near the stairs, usually on a wall bracket with a cover, and staff need training to use it.

Questions and answers

Who needs an evacuation chair?

Any building with stairs where someone may not be able to use them in an emergency. Your fire safety plan decides where they go.

Do staff need training?

Yes. Anyone expected to use the chair should be trained on it before an emergency.

Where should the chair be kept?

Near the top of the stairs, on a wall bracket, with its cover on.

Is there VAT on an evacuation chair?

No. Revenue zero-rates wheeled evacuation chairs.
