H-F Antidote Gel: first aid for hydrofluoric acid burns
H-F Antidote Gel is a calcium gluconate gel for the first aid treatment of hydrofluoric acid burns on the skin. It belongs in the first aid kit wherever hydrofluoric acid is used or stored. This guide sets out what the gel is, the maker's instructions for using it, and how to store it.
What it is
The gel is made by Bluedot, part of the Crest Medical Group. Bluedot describe it as preventing the acid drawing calcium from the wound, which reduces the burn damage to bone and deep tissue.

The maker's three steps
Bluedot's instructions, as printed on their leaflet. Treatment begins once any contaminated clothing has been removed.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Wash the burn area with clean water for at least 60 seconds |
| 2 | Massage H-F Antidote Gel into the area for 15 minutes |
| 3 | Assess whether medical attention is needed |
Bluedot say the gel may be enough on its own for a smaller burn, but medical assessment is always recommended. The gel must never be used on or around the eyes. In an emergency call 112/999.
A single tube or a box of 12
Buy one tube to complete a first aid kit, or a box of 12 for a site with several stations. Check the date on each tube when you check the kit.
