DIN 13164 first aid kits for taxis and vehicles
DIN 13164 is the German standard for what goes in a vehicle first aid kit. The National Transport Authority accepts a kit filled to DIN 13164 in a taxi, hackney or limousine. This guide sets out what the NTA asks for, what is in the kit and how to keep it in date.
What the NTA asks for
The NTA inspection manuals for small public service vehicles, for the first inspection and for each licence renewal, both say: "A First Aid kit complying with DIN 13164 or Health and Safety Authority travel kit recommendations shall be carried within the vehicle."
| At inspection, the kit fails if | What to do about it |
|---|---|
| It is missing | Keep it in the vehicle, where you can reach it |
| It is incomplete, or not to the specification | Replace anything used, and buy a kit filled to DIN 13164 or the HSA travel kit |
| Anything in it is out of date | Check the dates before the inspection, and replace the kit or the item before the earliest one |
| The container is not plainly marked as a first aid kit | Keep the kit in its own marked bag, not loose in the glovebox |
| It is obviously counterfeit | Buy from a supplier who names the maker |
The same manuals also ask for at least one portable fire extinguisher to EN3, suitable for classes A, B and C, with at least 2kg of dry powder or the equivalent, carried secured and ideally in the luggage compartment.

The 2022 edition of DIN 13164 added two medical face masks and reduced the triangular bandages from two to one.
The sterile dressings, plasters and wipes each carry a use-by date. One item out of date fails the kit, so look at every date before the inspection, not on the day.
The other kit the NTA accepts
