Under S.I. No. 299 of 2007, an employer has to provide first aid equipment suited to the work and to the number of people on site. The HSA guidelines give the contents for a travel kit and for 1–10, 11–25 and 26–50 persons, with more added in proportion over 50. The figures are minimums and can be increased where your risk assessment calls for it.

Choose the kit by headcount and by the risks of the work: a kitchen, a workshop and an office with the same headcount do not need the same kit. Every kit has its refill beside it, and Refill My Kit orders only what is missing.

Questions and answers

What size first aid kit does my workplace need?

It is set by the number of people and by the risks of the work. The HSA guidelines give contents for 1–10, 11–25 and 26–50 persons, with more added in proportion over 50.

What is the difference between HSA and HSE kits?

HSA kits follow the Irish Health and Safety Authority guidelines. HSE-labelled kits follow the British Health and Safety Executive list. For an Irish workplace, choose an HSA kit.

Can I keep painkillers in a first aid kit?

No. The HSA guidelines say drugs and medications must not be kept in a first aid box. Aspirin, where a first aider is trained to give it for suspected cardiac chest pain, is stored separately or with the AED.
